(COLORED BY A ) SEASON OF GRIEF (2019-2020)
My brother Kareem and I were very close. The works below were made during the months that spanned his cancer diagnosis in the summer of 2019 and his passing just 8 months later. It was a time defined by love and caregiving, by worry and exhaustion, and by feelings of profound loss. In the brief moments I spent in my studio, I took images apart, collected fragments, then reassembled them in unfamiliar ways. After watching my mother do embroidery by his bedside, I began to stitch into paper and work with textiles. Photography and collage necessarily involve the act of searching, and I searched for the unknown, the strange, the unseen, and for ways to move through that which had come undone. Some of these works do not exist any more because I have since taken them apart.
